À la mode
I’m calling this neckwarmer pattern À la mode because it’s… modular knitting. (Now whenever I think of this phrase, I think of Steve Carell saying it in Little Miss Sunshine. ha)
Pattern!
Use a medium weight yarn, anything from a dk to a worsted. For this, I used two strands of laceweight held together on US 9 needles.
First, make a gauge swatch in garter stitch with the yarn you want to use and potential needle size. See what looks best to you. When making the gauge swatch, keep track of how many rows it takes to get to 4". The stitch gauge doesn’t matter as much.
For me, 5 garter ridges (10 rows) = 1" length.
Second, measure the circumference of your neck. My neck was 12" around.
This pattern is made of short row panels and straight garter stitch panels. The finished product will sort of look like a flat piece of macaroni.
It is knit in this order: short row panel; straight; short row; short row; straight; short row
On the short row panel, the shorter side of it should be about 1", the longer side should be about 3". Take this into account when you’re making your gauge swatch.
The shortest side of your neckwarmer will end up being your neck circumference.
For me, this was 12".
The longest side will then be about 19.5" (based on my 12")
To determine how long to knit each straight panel, take your total neck circumference and subtract 4".
So, for me, 12" - 4" = 8".
Then, divide this number by 2.
8" / 2 = 4"
Therefore, each straight panel should be 4", or whatever you need to reach your total neck circumference.
Note: To keep track of which side is the "right" side, use a clip on stitch marker or safety pin (or whatever) to mark the right side.
w&t = wrap and turn. Since this is knit in garter stitch, it’s not necessary to pick up the wraps.
CO 25 sts, (WS) knit one row
Short Row Panel 1
[Row 1: k20, w&t, k20
2: k15, w&t, k15
3: k10, w&t, k10
4: k5, w&t, k5
Knit 4 rows
Row 9: k5, w&t, k5
k10, w&t, k10
k15, w&t, k15
k20, w&t, k20]
Straight panel 1
Knit in garter stitch until appropriate length. Measure this from the beginning of the straight panel, not the beginning of the entire piece. My length was 4", as shown above.
Short Row Panel 2
Repeat short rows for panel 1.
Short Row Panel 3
Repeat short rows for panel 1.
Straight Panel 2
Knit in garter stitch until appropriate length. Do the same as for the first straight panel.
Short Row Panel 4
Repeat short rows for panel 1.
Button holes: My gauge was loose enough that I didn’t need to make buttonholes. I was able to just sew on some buttons and push them through the stitches. If you need to make buttonholes, make them at the end, when you have about 4 rows left.
BO all stitches.
et voilà!

Thanks for posting your great pattern. I will be knitting up several of your neck warmers. It is very generous of you to share your design with all of us on the internet.

no problem! I’ve used countless free patterns via the internet, it’s about time I share one of my own.
I’d love to see the ones you knit up.
